Strongman/Powerlifter-friendly gyms

Post by Grant » Thu Feb 15, 2007 7:29 pm

Let's resurrect this thread again -- the old one disappeared when I moved servers, I believe. Please add any gyms that allow chalk, dropped deadlifts, grunting etc. Oh, and if the gyms have "changed" their policies, please post!

Strongman friendly gyms

Post by veagan » Sat Feb 17, 2007 3:43 pm

Im pretty sure( I trained there last year) that Dan PARE in St THOMAS is operating out of an old one room school at 1258 Talbot St St THOMAS. Its right across from the Comfort Inn at the east end of St THOMAS on hgy 3. He has rubber weights and wooden lifting platforms so drop away.

He has a steel log, loadable and an apollo axle( prob made by Paul COVENY) I think his dumbells go up to 140lb
Its a good place to learn those cleans as he has the rubber weights and platforms.
He is or was open till 8 at night and charged a $5 walkin.

Fitness Zone on 4th ave in Niagara Falls (905-356-3743) is letting me bring in any implements I want for training. I'm pretty much the only one that uses any of them, but I have brought in farmers walk implements, a pontiac sunbird (slowly being stripped of parts) for wheelbarrel and dead lift training, 2 pulling harnesses, a 750lb tire, and eventually a couple atlas stones if I ever get around to making them. I also have an empty red cylindae for making a log, but again, no time to do anyhting with it just yet.

Variety Village Sport Training Facility For All Abilities
3701 Danforth Avenue Scarborough, ON M1N 2G2

- five Oly platforms with enough bumper plates to sink a ship or two
- one powerlifting platform with more then enough iron
- one 800lb tire
- one loadable steel log 160lbs empty
- one set of farmers loadable to at least 350lbs
- two stones 250lbs and 300lbs
- one keg full of water I think about 170lbs

Its 10$ for a visit. A little expensive, but it goes to charity.

Hey,

I'm new here and having been training strongman for about 1.5 years in Saskatoon with Brad Provick, Chris Colonval, and co. I'll be moving to Ottawa in 3 weeks and was wondering if the list above was current for "friendly" gyms in the area? I was also wondering if someone could give me a contact for Ottawa Strong Powerlifting. I have a few questions but cannot find an email addy for them.

Thanks,

-Adam

Hey Adam, if your ever looking for some outdoor events fun. we often train weekends and some week night with a variety of implements, from tire sleds, steel sleds, tires, farmers implements, to axels. Send us a line, we'd be more than happy to add another to our little training group.

Cheers,
